How do you create a team of doers? People, who find a way to get the job done and don’t settle for complacency?
And how do you create a team of strategic and creative thinkers? People who search for new solutions to problems and make a new way when they can’t find an existing one?
This is what every company desperately needs to unlock within their own teams - a sense of can-do in all situations.
This attitude is the single most important through-line you can create to see growth and change because new ideas and solutions make money - no two ways about it.
At Engagement Unlimited, we ask all the teams we work with to identify what they think the issues are in their organization before we all get together. 9 times out of 10 the employees believe that simply hiring more staff will solve all of their problems.
Everyone thinks adding more bodies will magically fix everything because it will take the load off of them and their micro teams and everyone will feel a little less of the burden of success.
But when we go through our team building workshops, when we consult on team related issues, and when we work on their retreats and meetings, we RARELY come to this conclusion at the end.
If that was always the solution, everything would be easy! We could always blame structure, then hire more people and our job would be done instantaneously.
But the fact that these companies come to us at all means they care enough about their organization to know when their employees are so burnt out and stressed that they need to hire more people. They know there are other issues going on.
Remember - too many cooks in the kitchen spoils the broth. What you need to make is that the kitchen is full of people who know their jobs and how to communicate effectively with one another but also who are ready to jump into problem-solving mode with an expert generalist perspective. If you do all of that and you realize you’re still missing a crucial and important role in your line of service - then that is the time to consider the new hire.
To create your team of doers, you must involve the whole team in decision making and collaborative problem-solving.
You must create an environment where it’s not only safe, it’s EXPECTED that you don’t settle. It’s expected that you contribute and problem solve on an ongoing basis.
In short, you have to create engagement. Engagement promises results - we are finding that companies that have highly engaged employees produce 26% higher revenue per employee. (Via Wyatt Watson Study). We are finding that offices with engaged employees are 43% more productive’. (Via HayGroup Study). Finally, we are finding that you will experience less turn-over and increased happiness with increased engagement.
When we use engagement as a focus for discussion and action plans, we see survey results go off the charts with our highest results in our companies history. Engagement is the answer, engagement is ALWAYS the answer - so how are you ensuring engagement within your organization? Comment below!
